| Baby Alive, created by Kenner and later Hasbro, captured the imagination of young girls in the early 70’s by giving them a real “live” baby doll, one that could eat and poo in her diaper. The earliest versions of this doll came complete with specially made packets of food, a spoon and a lever in the back to make her chew. Along with producing dirty diapers, this doll would also throw up regularly! Over the years, Baby Alive has evolved and now includes wiggling, “talking” and much more.
Controversial Not long ago the creative minds down at Hasbro decided that it was time to add a boy doll to the Baby Alive line. In and of itself this is not a significant accomplishment, until you find out (some parents by accident) that the doll is actually anatomically correct. As you might imagine this has stirred a bit of controversy, but mainly due to the fact that it is not a well-advertised fact and there are precious few resources parents can access for images of the doll. Many parents want to know just how anatomically correct this doll really is! On the positive side, many parents commented that this is the perfect toy for young boys, finally a doll that can encourage fatherhood! Digital Age Baby Alive has come a long way on other fronts as well; the company has come into the digital age by providing children and parents an online game experience. These are simple point and click type interactive games that teach about caring for baby. Games: The first thing you should know is that Hasbro only provides one online game labeled Baby Alive playtime. This simple flash game places Baby Alive center screen of her pink nursery, below the baby on the screen will appear several different baby care items including a bottle, blankie, toys and more. It is your job to determine what baby needs based on her actions, coos and cries. After each correct selection, the screen changes for the next challenge. After so many dilemmas are, solved participants are given a caregiver award, which they can print and display if they like. Unofficial Games: A simple search of the internet for Baby Alive games will return several different results, most of which are not Hasbro creations. Options include:
Conclusion The idea of an “alive” baby doll is not a new one; however, Hasbro is one of the few toy companies to come close to producing. Little girls and boys can enjoy hours of pretend fun feeding, changing and playing with their very own “baby” and isn’t that the goal after all? Play time that can mimic real life can help prepare them for things to come.
